We seek to hire a Mechanical Engineer EIT/PE, to work within the Mechanical Department at Bowman, Foster and Associates in Norfolk, VA.  Typical responsibilities include tasks associated with assisting in the design, engineering analysis, equipment selection, and system layout of HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related mechanical building systems for commercial and government facilities.

Job will involve travel and on-site field work to perform field work.


  • Providing construction phase services including representing the firm on-site, answering RFI’s, reviewing shop drawings. Excellent communication skills is desirable.
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Working with, responding to, and taking direction from senior engineers, and project managers • Performing various aspects of mechanical engineering design as directed by a Mechanical Engineer including conceptual studies, program requirements, design analysis, calculations, equipment selection and layout and system selection and layout for building design, upgrades and retrofits.
  • Meeting with clients
  • Coordinating and communicating with design team members to ensure that mechanical design details integrate properly with all other disciplines represented on the design team.
  • Complying with the firms quality control policies and procedures
  • Learn and implement department and company standards
  • Develop design and analysis skills
  • Preparing project programming, schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents.


  • Responsible to perform engineering calculations with little supervision.
  • Responsible for document organization and clarity
  • Responsible for discipline drawing coordination
  • Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Engineer
  • Creating schematic-level site layout for projects of low to moderate complexity
  • Familiarity of LEED projects and be able to use online templates to demonstrate compliance.
  • Adhere to project budget and schedule
  • Perform Engineer or Senior Engineer tasks as directed




  • Must have graduated from an ABET-accredited 4-, 5-, or 6-year engineering program in one of the following disciplines:

    • Mechanical Engineering (Building design focus)
    • Mechanical Engineering Technology (Building design focus)
  • Completed course work should include Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Dynamic core courses.
  • Post-graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering a plus.


  • Must have earned the designation of EIT in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction  and have minimum 2 years experience working in the field.
  • Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 24 months of being hired.
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices and pursuing LEED accreditation is desirable.
  • Active membership in SFPE, ASHRAE, ASPE or other related professional organizations is desirable


  • A Mechanical Engineer EIT should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and information management.
  • Ability to use CDS Trane Trace 700 desirable.
  • Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable.


  • Up to 4 years of specific, post-graduation, mechanical engineering experience that includes experience with designing HVAC systems, including designing and sizing ductwork distribution and piping systems and equipment sizing, development of construction documents (drawings and specifications), coordination with other design team members, and experience in responding to construction phase queries and submittals.
  • Successfully completed at least one student internship in mechanical engineering
  • Experience in Plumbing design such as waste, vent, domestic water, and medical gas is desirable.
  • Complete all requirements for PE licensure within 24 months after being hired
  • Experience and a working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards
  • Experience and a working knowledge of applicable Building Codes and referenced material-specific standards, including IBC, NFPA, and UFC’s.




  • Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 24 months of being hired.
  • Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) is desirable


  • AutoCAD 2012+ Experience, AutoDesk REVIT desirable
